Green Giants’ Arms

Words and Music by Ben Scott © 2023

In the deep majestic Kylemore pass Is the house in which I was born
By the softly shifting steel lake in the green mountain’s warm embrace
Strong, dark and proud
Is where my heart lies, even now

Chorus:
Down in the valley of Connemara, deep in the belly so still and calm
Where the storms may rage and the clouds scud over
Safe in green giants’ arms, safe in green giants’ arms

I was happy as a child there on mountainsides where I would roam
In the soft grey light of winter days, streaming silver trails of foam
Playground, teacher, mother, home
the womb from which I was born

Chorus

But when I was a woman grown, I was told that I could not stay
I was to marry a man I’d never met, 50 years old and far away
The deal was already made
My father had no more to say

Chorus

But before I was to go away, the valley saw a last goodbye
The House was filled with friends and light, and the music filled the darkened sky
But I ran out and in the bracken lay
And my tears mixed with the mountain rain

Chorus

So for all these years I’ve lived apart from my dear Connemara home
Instead I keep within my heart hope one day that I will return
Under the green blanket there
In the deep lake of my memory
Keeps me warm in better days
And comforts me in my despair

Chorus
