Island Song

Words and Music by Ben Scott © 2023

On the mountain Lueberrernenner, the local men gather and kindle a fire
They look down across the shore to the wide expanse of water where the islands lie
They scan the ragged hills where the sealers have their camp
For the women they have lost, who were stolen away
Father for his daughter, brother for his sister
Husband for his wife they keep watch across the bay

And the women on the island look across to the mountain for the men they love
Though their lives are hard and hungry, they send a smoke in answer to the clouds above
Drifting out across the water too far to swim across
To the men they have lost when they were stolen away
Daughter to her father, sister to her brother
Wife to her husband, they signal o’er the bay

And they dance upon the island and sing their loneliness to the wild ocean air
And their dance tells the story of their courage and defiance and suffering they bear
To send a sign of hope and to show they won’t forget
To the lovers they have lost, who were stolen away
Daughter to her father, brother to his sister
Wife to her husband, that they might see them some day

On the mountain Lueberrernenner, the local men gather and kindle a fire
They look down across the shore to the wide expanse of water where the islands lie
And they scan the ragged hills where the sealers have their camp
For the women they have lost, who were stolen away
Father for his daughter, brother for his sister
Husband for his wife they keep watch across the bay
