Proper Piece Of Paper

Words and Music by Ben Scott © 2023

I’m writing down this message on a proper piece of paper
Not a jumble through the ether or a pixilated face
Cause I know you like to hold a letter firmly in your hands
And have something to hand around when folks call at your place

We heard about the snow that has crept down from the pole
And there’s buses on the pavement where the salt supplies are gone
But we’re in no place for gloating cause its flooding here again
And we’re hoping for a drought next just to get some washing done

Chorus:
And you ask us how we’re feeling
Like those ships we used to watch in Dublin bay
And we’re dragging at our anchor
Towards the shore one day, the next out to sea

The kids are much better at this moving than we
Though they’re missing eating rashers in your kitchen
And my boy, when I asked if he’d found some friends at school
Said ‘why bother ‘cause we’ll only move again’

Chorus

A sunny Sydney evening and a bit of blue water
Or the furze upon the Wicklow hills where we rambled with the dog
Some days we have two homes and others we have none
Some days we’re charting the way clear then find we’re heading into fog

Chorus

I’m writing down this message on a proper piece of paper
Not a jumble through the ether or a pixilated face
Cause I know you like to hold a letter firmly in your hands
And have something to hand around when folks call at your place
